In 2024, Screen Engine/ASI proudly partnered with TheWrap to introduce a more data-driven approach to evaluating the top 50 film schools in the United States. This collaboration marked a significant shift from previous methodologies, aiming to provide a comprehensive and objective assessment of each institution’s strengths and contributions to the film industry.

A New Methodology for Ranking Excellence

Under the leadership of our CEO Kevin Goetz, Screen Engine/ASI developed a detailed survey to assess various aspects of film schools across the nation. This survey collected data on factors such as student retention and graduation rates, faculty qualifications, available equipment, hands-on learning opportunities, and notable alumni achievements. By quantifying these elements, we aimed to reduce subjectivity and offer a clearer picture of what each institution offers to aspiring filmmakers.

Key Findings and Highlights

  • NYU Tisch School of the Arts emerged as the top film school, surpassing traditional leaders like the AFI Conservatory and USC School of Cinematic Arts. This was attributed to its extensive course offerings and commitment to fostering diverse filmmaking talents.
  • Institutions such as the University of Arizona, the University of Miami, and the University of Colorado saw significant improvements in their rankings, reflecting their ongoing efforts to enhance film education.
  • The inclusion of for-profit schools like the New York Film Academy and the School of Visual Arts highlighted the growing recognition of alternative educational models in film studies.

Welcoming New Entrants

Our data-driven approach also highlighted emerging programs, with five newcomers making the list: Southern Methodist University, Drexel University, Rochester Institute of Technology, the University of Georgia, and The Ohio State University. Their inclusion underscores the dynamic evolution of film education and the increasing opportunities available to students nationwide.

Looking Ahead

Screen Engine/ASI remains committed to refining and enhancing the evaluation process for film schools. We believe that a data-centric approach provides transparency and encourages institutions to continually strive for excellence in nurturing the next generation of filmmakers.

We extend our gratitude to TheWrap for this collaboration and look forward to future initiatives that support and celebrate educational excellence in the cinematic arts.
